Welcome To Skipton Psychotherapy

Who has Psychotherapy?

People who seek psychotherapy often do so because they are experiencing difficulties in their life. These difficulties can take many forms from relationship break-up or problems, to stress at work, feeling intense, uncomfortable feelings or coming to terms with painful life experiences. When people encounter these types of difficulties they revert to familiar ways of coping which may inhibit their ability to resolve the issue. These repetitive life patterns may be self-limiting even when we are not under stress.

However often people do not realise how limiting these patterns can be until a crisis arises. They often realise that they have had a similar experience and recognise that they are dealing with it in a very similar way. Even if they may suspect they will have a similar, unsatisfactory outcome. This is often the time when many people seek help from a professional psychotherapist because they feel like they “can’t cope” or because they “do not want to go through this again.”

Essentially people who undertake psychotherapy are people who want more from their life. This is not in a material way but is about finding contentment, to find peace and harmony, to fulfil one's potential or whatever their personal dissatisfaction is about. But they have come to a decision that life must be different. This may be because they are face particular difficulties of because they are experiencing dissatisfaction with life.

Psychotherapy does not just have to be an option for other people.

Many different types of people from all walks of life seek psychotherapy when they are dissatisfied with their life circumstances. For instance the types of people who seek psychotherapy to deal with life difficulties vary from barristers, teachers, accountants and doctors to sales and business people. But this is also not just a middle class pursuit. Many factory workers, low waged, unemployed and people on benefits also attend psychotherapy.

Professional help can be sought at any time. Often people seek guidance when they feel life is not satisfying, or because they want to feel good about themselves or have more intimate relationships with loved ones. Some people just want to understand themselves and learn about who they are and how they interrelate and interact with others and the world. All these situations are valid reasons to find a psychotherapist to explore, understand and change what is happening.

In these circumstances psychotherapy truly can be a process of self discovery and self actualisation.
